AH-1354 (1935) Saudi Arabia AR Riyal, Shipwreck Sea Salvaged SS John Barry, NGC AU Details

the John Barry was a US Liberty ship built in Portland Oregon and was carrying a special freight of 3 million US minted silver riyals as a payment connected with ARAMCO which was already operated in the region. It was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea by the German submarine U-859 on August 28, 1944. All but two of the crew survived, but the treasure was not recovered until 1994 by a joint venture of Saudi, French, and American recovery - only 1.3 million pieces were found, with more presumably still resting in the deep.
